Overview

Get feedback on a multi-style typeface, share your progress with others and join the Typemaster’s community.

You’ve completed an advanced type design program and have had a well-earned break—now you’re keen to get back into it with fresh eyes. Finish that typeface or create a new one with the Typemasters Advanced small group coaching.

These small group sessions (1–3 participants) are designed for experienced type designers who want to refine their process, gain new perspectives, and build momentum on multi-style typeface projects.

  • Ask a question or get feedback on a multi-style typeface
  • Access advanced multi-style proofing templates
  • Join the Typemasters community on Slack
  • Single or multi-session coaching available

Best suited for type designers looking to complete or expand their typeface projects with a structured and professional approach.

As a coach, I treat projects confidentially. I do not ask for part ownership of the project or for a mention, although mentions are lovely when they happen.

Learn how to:

  • Develop a process to help you finish your project
  • Spot and resolve spacing, proportion, and weight issues
  • Add extra weights or italics with a structured approach
  • Hone your skills and maintain momentum
  • Proof your typeface using advanced proofing templates

Meet Your Coach

Hi there, my name is Troy Leinster, and I’ll be your coach for the Typemasters Advanced small group coaching. I’m an Australian typeface designer and founder of Leinster Type, and I currently live in Jersey City, just across the river from New York City.

Over the last ten years, I’ve studied under many typeface designers around the world, collecting and refining my type design process, which I now share with others like yourself. In 2021, I founded Typemasters.xyz, and have now coached over 500 designers through the process of developing a typeface from concept to release.

From 2014-2021 I worked at the Hoefler&Co Type Foundry and taught typeface design at Cooper Union in New York. I’m a graduate of Type & Media program at KABK in The Hague and the Type@Cooper program at Cooper Union in New York.

I look forward to working with you to develop your typeface further.

Feedback & Reviews

It was a huge privilege to be Troy Leinster’s student. Typemasters is a differentiated customized learning experience in what concerns type design, being a good fit to its complex process. The one-on-one sessions allow to progress at our own pace and, as Troy really breaks down the process into manageable stages, things end up falling into place naturally, it was such a breakthrough for me. Typemasters is about how Troy teaches, motivates and is supportive, how he deconstructs misconceptions, and also about his precision and attention to detail. Cristina Lopes - Designer & Futurist, Portugal
Troy's weekly coaching classes gave me the tools to feel more confident when it comes to building out my typefaces and held me accountable for making progress on them. Chris Caldwell - Type Designer, New York, NY
Sometimes it’s hard to see problems when starring at it for too long. It is really helpful to have a second set of trained eyes at high professional level like Troy to help look at the design. TienMin Liao - Typeface Designer, New York, NY
Working with Troy has been a great experience, plain and simple. I initially took the Type Design Intensive, enjoyed Troy’s easy-going manner, and decided to continue with one-on-one coaching to complete my typeface. Kevin Foley - Art Director/Graphic Designer, Takasaki, Japan
Feedback in type design is especially critical. And feedback from someone with Troy’s level of expertise comes with insights and an eye for detail that have significantly expanded my understanding of type and type design. Dave Wilson - Graphic Designer & Copywriter, Morristown, NJ
Working with Troy has opened doors to my understanding type on a more profound level, even after my teaching typography classes for a few decades. Troy shares a master’s attention to the most critical aspects of type design from the specific details of glyph construction to the construction of a unified system. He brings a kind, patient and clear mentoring to the discipline and is encouraging and supportive. Laura Chessin - Associate Professor of Graphic Design VCUarts, Richmond, VA
